In youth soccer coaching, building teamwork can be a difficult goal to achieve. This is one of most important tasks of a youth soccer coach. Winning and having success in soccer is always proportional to the level of teamwork that exists in each and every team
If you have a few talented players who are only interested in making a name for themselves, then that’s all you’re going to have- a few selfish players and nothing else. No surprise that despite the talent, such teams seldom succeed.
Important soccer coaching tip: Teamwork starts to be present when each and every player understands that he’s just a piece of the engine – the team. This means that every player should understand his worth and what he contributes to the team. Another important aspect to consider is that you should praise the all team when things go well and blame them all too when things go wrong. Conversely, when there is a bad performance, the team needs to learn how to accept the blame collectively. No single player should be blamed- everyone should understand what went wrong and what needs to be fixed.
Develop teamwork by getting everyone involved and not by ignoring some kids just because they are shy or do not have good skills. You can start by designing drills that helps to bring all players together. Also explain your players that when everybody is pushing for the same side the results will be better and they’ll win more games.
You should always be alert for some “bugs” that may have the intention to ruin the good work you’re doing and eliminate the team spirit among the other players. Make sure you deal with this right away and don’t let it spread like a virus. Make sure you let your players know that they can have a word with you at all time if they need or if they have some concern. Communication goes a long way in building a sense of team spirit.
Let your players create a warrior dance for the team that they can perform before each game to motivate them even more. Having team badges or shirts is another great way to kindle the spirit of belonging among your players. You’ll feel that they’re proud of it if you see them wearing their team badge or shirt everywhere they go.
